01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Located in Yodo Ikegamicho in Kyoto's Fushimi Ward, Mattsuchan is a counter-centred izakaya with an easy warmth reminiscent of home and a touch of nostalgic Showa charm. Run by an approachable owner, the atmosphere allows solo guests to unwind naturally, making it a comfortable neighbourhood gathering spot for regulars and local drinkers alike.
The dishes served across the counter feature an unpretentious, comforting spread of small plates and drinking snacks. Alongside gently cooked, tender tamagoyaki rolled omelettes and richly flavoured horsemeat sashimi, the diverse lineup includes spring rolls, deep-fried shishamo smelt, meat mandu dumplings, and napa cabbage kimchi to enliven the meal. Settling in for the evening with a bubbling chigae hotpot and a chilled beer or other alcoholic drink is another satisfying choice.
Guests can also sing karaoke between drinks and bites, with the gathering growing livelier as the night progresses. Mattsuchan operates primarily over the weekend on Friday through Sunday evenings, accepts cash only, and takes advance reservations.
